The dynamic duo were an awesome team for the Maple Leafs, and later Bernie made his mark on the ice with the Philadelphia Flyers. Those were the days of true heroes behind the fiberglass molded mask of yesterday. Parent was a spirited player who adored fans and he was respected among shooters as one of the best to wear goalie pads. It was sad that an eye injury sidelined his career, but he wowed the crowds and drank from the coveted Stanley Cup and much more to his credit. Like Plante, Sawchu, Biower, Dryden,Giacomin, Worsely, Wakely, Esposito, Cheevers and others he was an inspiration to youngsters all over the world. He would have had a far longer career by starting out as the 2nd line center of Quebec where his line partner probably would have been Mats Sundin or Valeri Kamensky. He also wouldn't have started his career with such a huge target on his back. I always thought that his style of play was eventually going to catch up with him (Ala Roenick) but I never imagined he would pretty much be a shadow of his former self before he was 27. As it stands, he had 2 great seasons, 3 or 4 very good seasons and that's about it.

He's in the Hall of Fame now, but personally I don't believe he deserves the honor.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03926694110649930343noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28365363.post-16067247805996153502017-03-20T18:33:29.586-07:002017-03-20T18:33:29.586-07:00I'm from Boston and grew up with Orr and Espo,...I'm from Boston and grew up with Orr and Espo, but Bobby Clarke is a special player. He was an incredible catcher as well as a great hitter. He was actually the only catcher that could catch me consistently. It was not a surprise to me after I moved away from Saskatoon to see him in a professional sport although I thought it would have been baseball. Orest could have picked pretty much any sport I'm sure. Funny enough other than my cousin who played back up to Orest I can't remember one other player on the White Sox so I guess he left me with an impression for sure! I played for quite a few ocal clubs and the competition on teams to wear number 16 were fierce, EVERYONE wanted Clarky's number and if you wore it you better be good. You always knew who to watch on opposing teams by who had his number. I got to see his entire carrer up close and personal, indeed his influence on y entire family was enormous. We werea hackey family, my brother and I played year round. My younger brother wore number 16 his entire life, captained his High School team, earned a full scholarship to Providence College a D-1 powerhouse, was captain of that team his senior year, played for the USA Junior National Team in the World Hockey Championship in Helsinki in 1994 and was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in the 5th round in 1992 directly out of High School, no small feat for a kid out of Philly which wasn't exactly a hockey hotbed. All of these things can be directly attributed to Bobby Clarke. I'm sure that you have no memory of me. but I remember that you were a very good player even then with ambition to play for the Bruins. I was never any good, although in high school I once struck you out in a fun baseball game at KCVI. I spent most of my athletic career as a distance runner. In the early '70s I watched you play for the Flyers on TV. I though that you were their best defenseman. Had you been 30 years younger you would have been a star in the NHL but those were different times. I also understand that you are an excellent decoy carver and have put some in Aunt Lucy's restaurant on Princess St. I learned this from my late friend Jim Grasse who was also in our class. Like you I taught for many years. I live in the greater Albany NY area now but still make frequent trips to our cottage on Loughboro Lake which has been in family hands since 1945. We go up frequently during the summer months. My wife and I will be going up in mid July for a couple of weeks.

Best wishes, Charles Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15329617069582715991noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28365363.post-45957840564657048152016-05-31T12:27:48.621-07:002016-05-31T12:27:48.621-07:00RIP #19RIP #19Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11698918560914411687noreply@blogger.com
